PANDA BEAR 'YOU CAN COUNT ON ME'

Panda Bear | 09/03/10

Image: panada bear

And now comes, "You Can Count On Me", the second in the series of 7” singles from Panda Bear previewing his forthcoming album Tomboy, the much-anticipated follow-up to Person Pitch.

A gentle duet between Panda Bear and himself, "You Can Count On Me" glimmers with third world melodic overtones, an ethereal uplifting number that is over before you become too familiar. "Alsatian Darn" on the other hand is a much different creature...a slightly foreboding track with an off-beat melancholy chord progression that occasionally lets the light break through with a jaunty two-step, if ever so briefly.

A limited edition of "You Can Count On Me" will be available in stores beginning October 18th.

ANNOUNCING THE ORANGE JUICE BOXSET - COALS TO NEWCASTLE

Orange Juice | 08/20/10

Image: Coals To Newcastle Packshot

Domino are very honoured to announce the upcoming release of Coals To Newcastle, a comprehensive seven-disc anthology of one of the finest groups of all-time, Orange Juice. Coals To Newcastle will be released on November 9th.

The release will be comprised of six audio compact discs and one DVD that will contain the band’s complete discography and other studio recordings as well as a collection of their BBC sessions. The DVD will contain the band’s two promotional clips for “Rip It Up” and “What Presence?!” (the latter directed by Derek Jarman), their four performances on The Old Grey Whistle Test and the rare posthumous concert video Dada With (The) Juice. In total, Coals To Newcastle includes 16 previously unreleased tracks with another 23 tracks previously unavailable digitally on earlier re-issues.

Join the list to get the inside story of the boxset as told by its producers and Edwyn Collins + a/v gems from the cutting room floor & special offers.

In six tumultuous years, Orange Juice, led by Edwyn Collins, blazed a trail of self-reliance with the legendary Postcard label, ran in conjunction with then-manager Alan Horne, and greatly expanded the palette of independent music at the start of the ‘80s with their brand of literate pop songwriting that both pre-saged the coming of The Smiths and kickstarted a renaissance in Scottish pop music that continues to this day.

After an embryonic start as the punk-influenced Nu-Sonics, Orange Juice came into being in 1979 as unfashionable pre-Year Zero punk influences such as The Byrds, Chic, Motown and The Velvet Underground began to make their presence known in the band’s developing sound. Over the next year, the group recorded four landmark 7” singles on Postcard (as well as putting out early releases from Aztec Camera, The Go-Betweens and Josef K). Though each single proved more successful than its predecessor, greater commercial aspirations led the band to sign to Polydor in the midst of making their first album in a prescient deal in which the band retained ownership of their material.

The original lineup abruptly fell apart shortly after the release of the debut album, You Can’t Hide Your Love Forever, and, as quickly, the band’s future was decidedly unassured. However, with the addition of Malcolm Ross, formerly of Postcard labelmates Josef K, and Zimbabwe-by-way-of-Glasgow drummer Zeke Manyika, the group proceeded to make their commercial mark with the timeless funk and soul-inflected Rip It Up, whose title track was to be the group’s biggest UK hit, peaking at #8 in February of 1983.

During the recording of a follow-up, the group had decided to head in a more rock direction, but creative tensions arose again and the group fell apart during the recording sessions from which the Texas Fever mini-LP was culled. With Polydor’s support of the group withdrawing, Collins, joined in the studio by Manyika, persevered to make the bittersweet swan song album, The Orange Juice, a collection that telegraphed the group’s impending demise amidst some of their finest recordings. Collins made it official in March of 1985 announcing mid-performance at a miner’s benefit at the Brixton Academy that it would be Orange Juice’s last performance.

NEW TRICKY WEBSITE & VIDEO FOR MURDER WEAPON

Tricky | 08/13/10

Image: tricky jack dante

As well as unveiling his new website (http://www.trickysite.com), Tricky unveils his new video for the first single, "Murder Weapon", from his forthcoming album Mixed Race (out October 5th).

"Murder Weapon" is a reworking of the classic dancehall hit from Jamaican-born Echo Minott, originally released in the early '90s. Tricky fell in love with the track and was determined to hear how it would sound with a female vocalist (in a similar fashion to his reworking of "Black Steel" with Martina Topley-Bird). Tricky here enrolls Irish-Italian Franky Riley, who has toured as Tricky's vocalist for two years and makes her recording debut on his new album Mixed Race.

The video, filmed by Fleur and Manu in La Salle, Tricky’s boxing club in Paris, features Tricky training and boxing with other local fighters. It's a cinematic odyssey of guns, boxing and coercion.

NEW OWEN PALLETT EP - "A SWEDISH LOVE STORY"

Owen Pallett | 08/11/10

Image: Swedish Love Story Packshot

Owen Pallett follows his critically acclaimed album Heartland with an EP of brand new material. A Swedish Love Story brims with pop melodies, sweeping strings and joyous emotion. From the opening track’s propulsive rhythm and soaring vocals, to the taut and energetic strings of "Scandal at the parkade", into the gorgeous and epic closer "Don’t stop", the A Swedish Love Story EP is a stunning mini-masterpiece.

A Swedish Love Story will be released on 10" and digital on September 28th. It's available for pre-order now from the Domino Mart.

Here's the tracklist:
01. A man with no ankles
02. Scandal at the parkade
03. Honour the dead, or else
04. Don’t stop

Here's what Owen has to say about A Swedish Love Story:
To contrast Heartland's convoluted record process, and also to cut myself a break, I recorded this EP in New York City over a week, using not much more than my violin, my Moog, a bass and a drum kit. It's closer in sound to my first album Has A Good Home than anything else. It's called A Swedish Love Story in tribute to one of my favourite films En Karlekshistoria  and as a love letter to the Swedish pop stars who inspired it. This is probably the most posi record I'll ever make, enjoy the mood while it lasts.
