NEW OWEN PALLETT EP - "A SWEDISH LOVE STORY"

Owen Pallett | 08/11/10

Image: Swedish Love Story Packshot

Owen Pallett follows his critically acclaimed album Heartland with an EP of brand new material. A Swedish Love Story brims with pop melodies, sweeping strings and joyous emotion. From the opening track’s propulsive rhythm and soaring vocals, to the taut and energetic strings of "Scandal at the parkade", into the gorgeous and epic closer "Don’t stop", the A Swedish Love Story EP is a stunning mini-masterpiece.

A Swedish Love Story will be released on 10" and digital on September 28th. It's available for pre-order now from the Domino Mart.

Here's the tracklist:
01. A man with no ankles
02. Scandal at the parkade
03. Honour the dead, or else
04. Don’t stop

Here's what Owen has to say about A Swedish Love Story:
To contrast Heartland's convoluted record process, and also to cut myself a break, I recorded this EP in New York City over a week, using not much more than my violin, my Moog, a bass and a drum kit. It's closer in sound to my first album Has A Good Home than anything else. It's called A Swedish Love Story in tribute to one of my favourite films En Karlekshistoria  and as a love letter to the Swedish pop stars who inspired it. This is probably the most posi record I'll ever make, enjoy the mood while it lasts.

ODDSAC (ANIMAL COLLECTIVE & DANNY PEREZ) AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER

Animal Collective | 07/27/10

Image: oddsac dvd image

ODDSAC is a feature film collaboration between Animal Collective and filmmaker Danny Perez, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in early 2010 and has screened to sold-out audiences in dozens of US cities. We're thrilled to announce that the DVD will be released on August 10th and is now available for pre-order.

Pre-order ODDSAC

ODDSAC is a dense and surreal layering of audio and visual elements that eschews conventional narrative to create a visceral viewing experience.

ODDSAC represents a new synthesis of music and film, a “visual album” whose songs will not be released in any other form. It features an original score with new songs from Animal Collective and complex digital manipulation by Perez, a debut filmmaker and visual artist known for his concert projections with musicians such as Black Dice and Panda Bear.

Perez and Animal Collective have also collaborated on two music videos (“Who Could Win A Rabbit” and “Summertime Clothes”), and a major art installation piece Transverse Temporal Gyrus, which occupied the entire Guggenheim Museum in New York City. ODDSAC is the result of over four years of intense collaboration between Perez and the band.

“A mind-frazzling piece full of vampire monks, demonic fakirs, and lengthy episodes of trance-inducing pattern loops. A confrontational and immersive experience.” – The Guardian

“Whatever visual sustenance your everyday life may provide, this intense rush of unadulterated imagination will leave you feeling alive and invigorated. ODDSAC’s baffling nature is also its greatest charm – sit back, disengage your critical faculties and allow the vivid colours and sounds to assault your senses. It’s the nearest you can get to an out-of-body experience without touching the hallucinogens.” – GQ

WILD BEASTS AND VILLAGERS NOMINATED FOR THE 2010 MERCURY MUSIC PRIZE (UK)

07/20/10

Image: Mercury

Domino is thrilled to announce that two of our albums have been nominated for the UK's Mercury Music Prize 2010. Last year’s sublime Two Dancers from England’s Wild Beasts and the recently released Becoming a Jackal from Dublin-based Villagers are amongst the twelve albums shortlisted for this year’s prize.

WILD BEASTS - TWO DANCERS
Wild Beasts’ second album, Two Dancers, was released last summer to exceptional critical acclaim. Wild Beasts made a record of earthly pleasures that sounded thrillingly widescreen, open and in awe of life; equally intoxicated and disturbed by the possibilities of pleasure. Two Dancers is a streamlined, minimalist and user friendly Wild Beasts, moving with equal grace and gusto, equally elegant and ugly. A "5 star review" in the London Sunday Times, features in NME, MOJO, Uncut and a Number 1 Album of the Year plus cover of The Fly have proven the band’s wide appeal and steadily growing fanbase. The four-piece has recently performed heroic sets at Glastonbury & the iTunes festival. They return to N. America for a brief run of shows including Lollapalooza in Chicago and Outside Lands in SF.

VILLAGERS - BECOMING A JACKAL
Villagers are Conor J. O’ Brien and friends, who won over many hearts with their debut Becoming a Jackal, released in spring this year. Becoming a Jackal introduced us to Villagers’ vivid narratives, gripping poetry and melodic depth. Conor J. O’Brien’s clear and distinctive voice weaves a remarkable spell, delivering an album of rare and alarming beauty. Villagers return to N. America beginning a brief West Coast Tour in Vancouver on July 21st.

Domino is proud to release Wyatt, Atzmon, Stephen’s beautiful album, For the Ghosts Within, on October 19th 2010.  For The Ghosts Within is a new collaboration between Robert Wyatt, saxophonist/composer Gilad Atzmon and violinist/composer Ros Stephen. A song cycle featuring, along with Wyatt originals, standards such as "Lush Life", "In A Sentimental Mood" and "Round Midnight", For The Ghosts Within places Wyatt’s voice (and whistling) amid the seductive drama of string quartet, alto saxophone, and the universal rhythms of the night.

For The Ghost Within will be available on CD, LP and digital.

NEW ALBUM FROM TRICKY "MIXED RACE" ON OCTOBER 5TH

Tricky | 07/02/10

Image: tricky cropped

Domino is pleased to announce the arrival of the new album from Tricky, Mixed Race, on October 5th. Mixed Race is Tricky’s ninth studio album and his second released through Domino after 2008’s Knowle West Boy.

You can listen to the first single, "Murder Weapon", below:

Tricky - Murder Weapon

Mixed Race was recorded in Paris, where Tricky currently lives, and is Tricky’s most direct album to date. Musically his magpie’s eye takes influence from UK, Jamaica, the US, North Africa and France.

There’s a wealth of experience distilled within as Tricky approaches twenty years of recording; yet he remains as vital as ever. He sets out his motivation early with "Every Day", and then proceeds with narration and temptation, reflection and perception, mischief and misbehaviour.

As ever he has a wealth of singers and collaborators. Mixed Race introduces Irish-Italian Franky Riley who has toured as Tricky’s vocalist for two years and makes her recording debut here, there’s also Terry Lynn, Bobby Gillespie, Hakim Hamadouche, Blackman and Tricky’s brother, Marlon Thaws who’s the thirteenth of fourteen siblings.

Tricky says “Every album is a learning experience and this is concentrated music, there’s no dilution. I’m comfortable in my own skin now, comfortable with being in the light. I’m not just a kid from Knowle West trying to build a future, I have some experience, I can experiment, I can be honest, and honestly, musically, I can’t be touched. I used to hide in the shadows when I played live, now I perform. I used to hate doing interviews, now I feel honoured that people would be interested in what I have to say. I’ve spent my life going between cultures; Mixed Race is about that, and in a very direct way.”

Mixed Race will be available on CD, LP and digital download.

The album’s tracklisting is as follows:
1. Every Day
2. Kingston Logic
3. Early Bird
4. Ghetto Stars
5. Hakim
6. Come To Me
7. Murder Weapon
8. Time To Dance
9. Really Real
10. Bristol To London

MOUNT WITTENBERG ORCA (DIRTY PROJECTORS + BJORK) AVAILABLE NOW

Mount Wittenberg Orca, the collaboration between Dirty Projectors and Bjork, is now available.

Visit www.mountwittenbergorca.com to listen, purchase and watch videos from this exciting musical mind-meld.

The 20-minute, seven-track piece was written by Dave Longstreth. Money raised from the release will be donated to the National Geographic Society.

Listen to "All We Are" from Mount Wittenberg Orca

Below is a letter from Dave explaining how the collaboration came together.

"In April 2009, Brandon Stosuy from Stereogum.com asked me if we wanted to play a benefit concert at a bookstore in New York. I said yes. He asked Björk the same thing, and she said yes. Then he asked us if we wanted to collaborate, and we said yes. Björk asked me what we should do, and I said, 'I don’t know, I guess I’d really love to write a bunch of new songs for us to sing together?' And she said Yes.

That same month, Amber from Dirty Projectors was walking along a ridge on Mount Wittenberg, north of San Francisco. She was looking out at the ocean and saw a little family of whales, as you sometimes do in April on the Northern California coast. I wrote some songs about it and sent them to Björk, who agreed to sing the part of the mom whale. The songs became Mount Wittenberg Orca. Amber and Angel and Haley sang the part of the kid whales, and I sang the part of Amber. We sang all week long and learned the music just in time to perform it at the bookstore on May 8th.

Then our album Bitte Orca came out and we went on tour forever. We finally got a chance to record Wittenberg last month, almost exactly a year after we first sang it. We went into the Rare Book Room in Brooklyn and rehearsed it for three days, then we recorded it as quickly and as live as possible. We only overdubbed lead vocals and a guitar solo.

Now we’re making a website for it, which will be the only place you can buy it. It’s going be up June 30th (we are playing in Utrecht that day!) The music is going to be $7, because there are seven songs. You can preorder now if you click here.

We’ve decided to give away all the money that Wittenberg generates to the project of creating international marine protected areas. Only 1% of the oceans are protected in any way and this is a huge problem. We’re working with the National Geographic Society to create areas of sustainability, so the oceans don’t end up like a giant poisonous corpse hugging the continents. You can learn more about this project here and here  and here  and here.

We’re so psyched about how this recording came out and hope you are too. Don’t listen on those tinny computer speakers — put in on the stereo and blast dat shiiiiiiiiii!!

Enjoy.

CLINIC: NEW ALBUM ANNOUNCED

Clinic | 06/21/10

Image: clinic press shot

Domino is proud to announce the arrival of Clinic's new album Bubblegum, released on October 5, 2010.

Bubblegum, Clinic’s sixth album, is a rewiring of Clinic’s trademark hyped up sound.  In place of churning riffs and wired vocals is a dream state of harpsichord, dulcimers and strings.  Melody and softness combine with the band’s unique internal logic to produce a record of pop beauty.

Bubblegum is Clinic throwing us a curveball.  Alternating between lost soundtracks to exploitation films: ‘Liontamer’, ‘Un Astronauta En Cielo’, watery pop-psych: ‘Bubblegum’, ‘Linda’, ‘Forever (Demis’ Blues)’ and ping-pong symphonies: ‘Milk & Honey’ and ‘Another Way Of Giving’, this is a very different and very singular Clinic.

Produced by John Congleton (Bill Callahan, St Vincent) and recorded at Elevator Studios in Liverpool, Bubblegum is a high water mark in Clinic’s career to date.

Listen to a characteristically unique megamix of ‘Bubblegum’ here: Bubblegum medley by savagehector

DIRTY PROJECTORS RECORD BOB DYLAN COVER (AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD)

Dirty Projectors | 06/07/10

Image: dirty projectors press shot 4

Dirty Projectors recently recorded a version of Bob Dylan's "I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine" for Levi's Pioneer Sessions.

As the fine people at Levi's point out, "Refashioning a lesser-known Bob Dylan gem isn’t an obvious choice for this band, but Longstreth shares with Dylan a spirit of restless reinvention....'I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine' is a simple production, just Dylan’s voice, guitar and some light drums. But, the song’s cryptic lyrics, mysterious and concise, fit neatly within the little mysteries that Longstreth has created with Dirty Projectors’ catalog."

We couldn't agree more.

You can download the song and watch exclusive video from the session here.
