Today, Real Estate release their new single “Had To Hear” as a limited-edition orange-colored vinyl 7”, in a run of just 500 copies. Coming backed with a b-side, a cover of The Nerves’ “Paper Dolls”, which was recorded in Chicago during the ‘Atlas’ recording session, the single is also available digitally via iTunes here.

Grab your copy of the limited edition release here:

Alex Bleeker from Real Estate, on how The Nerves cover came into being:

"I'm drawn to the Nerves' intricate guitar work. We're interested in creating similar guitar parts for Real Estate, but the Nerves have a more aggressive sound so I thought it would be fun to wear that "musical costume" for a while. Blondie already did a pretty good job with "Hanging on the Telephone" so "Paper Dolls" seemed like the next logical choice."

Austra | 08/05/14

Image: austra habitat

Following on from videos for EP tracks ‘Habitat’ and ‘Hulluu’, Austra are pleased to share a video for ‘Doepfer’. Directed by Adrienne Crossman and filmed in various locations around Toronto, the ‘Doepfer’ video premiered with THUMP today and can be viewed here.

Made up of footage taken in Toronto and Berlin, the video for Austra’s Doepfer acts as a disruptive visual meditation on the third released track from their Habitat EP. Accompanying the percussive-heavy dark synth soundtrack, the visual landscape of the video is made up of eerie footage of dark hallways, a dead mouse, silhouetted figures and mysterious textured surfaces, including a pixelated close up of billowing tin foil. As the music intensifies so do the visuals, with an increased frequency of anamorphic glitched disruption. Shot, edited and co-directed (with drummer Maya Postepski) by Adrienne Crossman, the video for Doepfer is a glance into the distorted intricacies of the band’s increasingly experimental musical nature.

Toronto-based Austra’s Habitat, a four-track EP, is out now on Domino. Order the limited-edition hand-numbered 12” here from Austra or download from iTunes.

White Lung | 07/08/14

Image: White Lung In Your Home video still

Fresh from touring Australia and New Zealand, White Lung are poised to release new single ‘In Your Home’ on August 25th before tearing up North America with a string of live dates once again. Mish Way explains the video:

“This video was created by Justin Gradin and Ben Jacques. Justin has done all our album art since our first LP so ‘In Your Home’ is funny, demented and uncomfortable, it's perfect. The star of the video is my dear friend Christina Kenton who pushes the baby cart and smiles at the end. She's an incredible artist herself. This video is filled with people way more talented than the four of us.”

Watch the new video for ‘In Your Home’ below.

Deep Fantasy is their third full length and proves White Lung to be every bit as confrontational as before, but it appears that Vancouver’s hard hitting rock n’ roll outfit have opened their sound up just enough to draw listeners in:

“I wanted it to sound more like a rock record than a punk record. I didn't want to lose any of the speed and aggression that we have, but I wanted more melodies,” says Way, “But it's still a really hard record.”

Way is more provocative and melodic than ever on Deep Fantasy, lyrically surveying addiction (“Drown With the Monster”), body dysmorphia (“Snake Jaw”) and sexual dynamics (“Down It Goes,”) amongst other dinner table topics.  Guitarist Kenneth William, a devotee of Johnny Marr “plays with the speed of an 80s hardcore dude” whirled in Anne-Marie Vassiliou’s relentless and seemingly effortless approach to drumming.

Mish compiled a playlist: ‘Songs That Inspired Deep Fantasy’, listen  HERE

Deep Fantasy is available to buy now from Dom Mart HERE and through iTunes HERE

Austra | 07/03/14

Image: Austra Hul

Toronto-based Austra have shared a video for Hulluu, directed by Zeesy Powers and featuring choreography and dancing from Emily Law

Hulluu is the last track on Habitat, a brand-new four-track EP which is out now. Order the limited-edition hand-numbered 12" here from Austra or download from iTunes

Katie Stelmanis from Austra said the following about the video:

I knew that I wanted the video for Hulluu to focus on movement. I've known Emily since I was 12 and she is the best dancer/waacker in Toronto so I definitely wanted her to be a part of it. Zeesy is a super-talented artist who I used to live with and collaborate with all the time making soundtracks for her performance art pieces (and who was actually the one to encourage me to start performing my own music in the first place). I thought it would be cool to work together again. We used a green screen and filmed Emily dancing to the track for about 4 hours.

In director Powers' words: "The spirit self is unleashed in the nightclub in your mind. The beat hits and time stops, speeds up, slows down. On the dance floor do you compete with others or only yourself? True freedom fills the body with what we have been, are, and could be. Shedding psychic bodies reveals the person always there. Move."

The band recently completed US west coast dates with Chvrches after having performed at Coachella and Sasquatch and have upcoming festivals in Canada and Europe including a show at Oval Space in London on 10th July. The band has also announced North American dates supporting Broken Bells. Full dates are below.

Owen Pallett | 06/20/14

Image: song for five and six

Owen Pallett
has announced a new series of tour dates in support of his newest critically-acclaimed album, In Conflict, as well as debuting a series of remixes of his latest single, "Song For Five & Six", from Ada, The Cyclist and the late DJ Rashad (along with his collaborator, DJ Spinn), which can be heard HERE below and will be available for purchase at select electronic digital outlets starting today.

The upcoming live tour dates will feature the recently-debuted "power trio" lineup of Pallett on violin and keyboards. drummer Robbie Gordon and multi-instrumentalist Matt Smith, with whom Pallett had originally played with in Les Mouches and with whom In Conflict was recorded.

The Creators Project unveils a new short documentary exploring the "thrill of creation" in Owen Pallet's live show and recording process:

Hailing from Cologne/Köln, Germany, Michaela Dippel has been making excellent minimalist house under the Ada moniker for over a decade.  Her last album, MeineZarten Pfoten, was released in 2011 on Pampa Records and comes highly recommended.

Andrew Morrison has released two albums of bracing retro electronics as The Cyclist, including last year's Bones In Motion on Leaving/Stones Throw.  This is his first remix since last year's excellent revision of George Fitzgerald's "I Can Tell By Way You Move".

Lastly but not leastly, this remix package features one of the last works of the late Footwork pioneer DJ Rashad (born Anthony Harden) who passed away on April 26th from complications from a blood clot.  The remix also features the work of his longtime collaborator, DJ Spinn, who was prominent on Rashad's landmark 2013 album, Double Cup (Hyperdub).

In Conflict is Owen Pallett's fourth album and the second under his own name after releases as Final Fantasy.
Time Out London calls In Conflict "a heady, beautiful and captivating album that demands and deserves your full attention and it won't be bettered by much else this year".  It is available digitally (WIG304D), on CD (WIGCD304), standard edition LP (WIGLP304) and on limited edition double LP (with 3 bonus tracks) (WIGLP304X) through Dom Mart.
You may order the album HERE.

The "Song For Five & Six" remix package is available for purchase from BeatportBleepBoomkatJuno and What People Play.
